Did you know that in the state of Florida it is illegal for businesses to sell hearing aids through the mail?
Florida Statue 468.1265 states: It is unlawful for any person to sell or distribute hearing aids through the mail to the ultimate consumer. Any violation of this section constitutes a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s.775.082 or s.775.083
This statute was set up to protect Florida citizens with hearing loss from purchasing hearing aids that may not be appropriate for them. For instance, you may have a hearing loss that is medically correctable and not need a hearing aid once the medical condition has been managed. Or, you may receive hearing aids that are programmed too loudly for your hearing loss and may actually further damage your hearing permanently. And in some cases, it may be as simple as removing the wax from your ears to correct your hearing.
At Clear Sound Audiology, we complete diagnostic hearing tests to determine the cause and degree of hearing loss you have. Once this is determined, we are able to recommend the best course of treatment for you — whether that is a medical referral to an ENT physician, earwax cleaning, hearing protection, or hearing aids.
If we find that hearing aids are the appropriate treatment option for you, we will spend extensive time with you to ensure the sound is comfortable and speech is clear. Programming is based on detailed testing completed in our sound-treated booths and we use our experience and education to properly set your hearing aids. Next, we make sure that the hearing aid fits your ear properly and that you are able to put the hearing aid in the ear correctly and easily. If this is not done, you may be missing a lot of the volume that you need and the hearing aid may whistle. Finally, we complete testing with a microphone in the ear to make sure the hearing aid output is what we would want it to be.
All of these services are included with your purchase of hearing aids at Clear Sound Audiology and are not an additional cost to you. These services are provided to ensure that you are receiving the best and most appropriate hearing aid and programming for your hearing loss. These are some of the reasons why Florida has created the statute to protect you from mail-order hearing aids.
