How loud is too loud?

A question several of our patients ask us is how loud can they listen to their headphones. Listening to your headphones for extended periods of time at loud levels can permanently damage your hearing. What’s even more dangerous, is that the effects may not show up for years later, after you have already exposed yourself to these damaging levels.

A quick and easy rule to ensure you are protecting your hearing while listening to head phones is the 60/60 rule.

Protect your ears while listening to headphones. Keep it at 60% volume or less for no more than 60 minutes at a time.

The 60/60 rule means keeping the volume at 60% or less for no more than 60 minutes at a time. Keeping to this rule, you can listen to your favorite music or watch your favorite show, without worry.
