A recent review of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey shows a significant relationship between heart failure and hearing loss.
Seventy-five percent of adults over the age of 70 with heart failure also have hearing loss.
Why is this important? Because to manage heart failure, patients must frequent noisy hospital settings, talk with doctors who may mumble or speak with their back turned, and follow numerous verbal instructions from their doctors and nurses. If they struggle to hear well, their ability to manage their heart disease may be compromised.
This is just one more reason why audiometric screening and treatment of hearing loss is recommended for older adults.
